Main Objective
One app that runs bookings, payments and progress for the whole school.
CodeCrackers built a custom iOS and Android app for a UK driving school with 18 instructors. Pupils now book, pay and track their progress in one place, and instructors manage their diaries on the go. No-shows fell by 42%.

The client is a family-run driving school in Greater Manchester with 18 instructors, teaching manual and automatic lessons to hundreds of learners every year. Friendly instructors and word-of-mouth referrals had built it a strong local reputation.
Behind the scenes, everything ran on phone calls, WhatsApp messages and paper diaries. Lessons were missed, payments had to be chased, and instructors took booking calls between lessons. The owner asked CodeCrackers to build one app that worked for pupils, instructors and the office.
One app that runs bookings, payments and progress for the whole school.
Fewer no-shows, more app bookings and less office admin.
The school had great instructors and steady demand, but four connected problems were costing time and money every week. Each one made the others worse.
Pupils booked and moved lessons by calling or messaging their instructor, often while the instructor was teaching.
Missed calls and double bookings.
Late cancellations and forgotten lessons left instructors with empty slots and no pay for that time.
Income lost every week.
Many lessons were paid in cash or by bank transfer afterwards, and the office spent hours chasing what was owed.
Late and missing payments.
Progress was recorded on paper or kept in instructors' heads, so pupils rarely knew how close they were to being test-ready.
Pupils unsure when to book their test.
What the client wanted to achieve: a single app where pupils book, pay and see their progress, and instructors manage their day on the go. The office would see everything in one place.
Before designing anything, we spoke with the owner, instructors and pupils about how lessons were booked, paid for and tracked.
We mapped how lessons were booked, moved and paid for, and where time and money were lost each week.
We studied leading UK lesson booking apps: their booking rules, payment options and progress features.
We mapped three groups: young learners who expect to do everything on their phone, instructors on the road, and the office team.
Generic booking apps couldn't handle instructor areas, pickup points and progress tracking, so a custom app built around the school's own rules was the right fit.

A structured twelve-week approach kept every stage transparent and on time. Select a stage to see what happened.
We started by speaking with the owner, a group of instructors and recent pupils. We then agreed the booking rules, payment options and must-have features.
Drag the handle to compare how the school ran before and after the app.

Both views are illustrations: the “before” shows the old way of working, the “after” shows the new system. Client data is not shown.
Four connected workstreams, each one solving a specific part of the challenge.
Pupils see their instructor's live availability and can book, move or block-book lessons within the school's rules. Instructors set their working hours and pickup areas once, and the app handles the rest.

Pupils get reminders the day before each lesson and again two hours before. A 48-hour cancellation rule is built in, and freed-up slots are offered to pupils on the waiting list.

Pupils pay per lesson or buy discounted ten-hour bundles with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Their balance is always visible, and instructors can see payment status before every lesson.

After each lesson, instructors tick off skills and add a short note so pupils can see their progress. The office dashboard shows bookings, payments and every instructor's diary in one place.

The finished app on iPhone and Android, with pupil booking, the instructor diary and progress tracking.

Hover over a screen and scroll through the product screens.
Measured results in the first 90 days after launch.
Missed and late-cancelled lessons, compared with the same period last year.
Lessons booked or moved by pupils without a phone call.
Time spent each week on bookings and chasing payments.
One custom app replaced phone calls, paper diaries and cash. Pupils book and pay in seconds, instructors spend their time teaching, and the office finally has a clear view of the whole school.
“Our phones used to ring all day, and we lost money every week to no-shows. CodeCrackers built an app around exactly how we work. Pupils book and pay themselves, instructors can focus on teaching, and the office runs far more smoothly.”
